Peanuts are a cheap and fairly healthy snack enjoyed around the world. You can have them boiled, dry-roasted, or eaten as butter. But can you eat peanuts with braces?
Unfortunately, the answer is No, you can’t eat peanuts with braces. Nuts are a very hard food and that’s number one on our list of food to avoid with braces. Hard and crunchy foods require a lot of force to break and that can lead to a bracket coming off or a wire bending or breaking.
Why Can’t You Eat Peanuts With Braces?
With peanuts especially people tend to take a handful and chew them. The combination of hardness and then continual chewing means they’re highly likely to break braces. A bracket or wire breaking can lead to a few extra weeks of treatment as you need to make an appointment – in that time any movement can go backward!
The mushed-up peanuts then get stuck in between braces brackets easily. This salty, sweet mess then hangs around on the teeth which can lead to staining or cavities. So overall, you shouldn’t eat peanuts with braces.
Can You Eat Roasted Peanuts With Braces?
The answer is still No, you shouldn’t eat roasted peanuts with braces. The roasting doesn’t really do much to make the peanuts any softer. In fact, it tends to leave them dried out and harder. Even worse!
Can You Eat Crushed Peanuts With Braces?
There’s an argument for the peanuts being better to eat if they aren’t in their solid form but we’d still recommend it as there will still be chunks to bite down on – plus the chewing factor. Best to stay away.
What Happens If I Eat Peanuts With Braces?
You could break a bracket or wire if you eat peanuts while wearing braces. If you absolutely must eat peanuts with braces then just have just one or two at a time, chew them right at the back of your teeth away from the braces, and don’t chuck more in until you’ve completely chewed and swallowed the first lot.
Also make sure the brush your teeth 30 minutes after, or at least swish your mouth of peanut debris with mouthwash or water if you have no other options.
Can You Eat Peanut Butter With Braces?
Peanut butter should not be eaten with braces either. I know, it sucks. I’ve even tried without knowing and it was hell. The sheer stickiness of the peanut butter makes it really dangerous for pulling a bracket off, then it’s absolute hell to try and remove when brushing and cleaning. Honestly, the effort is not worth the short treat!
